For many, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is an undeniable classic in gaming. Many would say the Sonic series peaked at the time of this title. While I'm not one to argue with that, one must wonder if the translation to XBLA brings any upgrades or downgrades to the beloved classic.
First thing to make note of, no Knuckles. Many know that while Sonic 3 originally came without Knuckles, it was the enchiladas inclusion through expansion that added the third wheel to the great game. I can't imagine it would've been to hard to include Knuckles in this game, considering how the game is $5 (400 MS Points). This could be patched post release or even some inexpensive DLC might be worth it. It just seems like too much of an oversight for such a great game.
Another gripe, even though they added HD support; the sprites look blown up and messy. It seems unneccesary to update to HD if you're not going to consider the effects on sprites.
Sonic 3 does include all the features like Achievements/Trophies, Online multiplayer, and Leaderboards. You can even adjust some game options. It's nice to see not just a straight up port, it's obvious that some decent additions (minus Knuckles) was added.
In the end, despite all my gripes. Nostolgia prevailed overall. If you've never played this title the game may seem overly dated. Even for Sonic 3 vets, the messy sprites and the missing Encilada are huge oversights. I still had fun, and for $5 you really can't go wrong.
